What is High Tower Magazine?

We’re a brand new online e-magazine associated with the superversive literary movement. We publish a minimum of two short stories a month, on the 14th and 28th of the month respectively. We also occasionally publish hidden gems, stories that one of our editors loved so much they paid out of pocket so we didn’t lose it.

Wait a second, what is the superversive literary movement?

In 2003 the greatest living essayist, Tom Simon, published the seminal essay that stands as the foundation to the movement here. In it, he lays out the vision that drives a movement that has already inspired many writers to take up their pens in defense of the good, the true, and the beautiful.

I highly encourage everyone to read the essay, but in summary:

Subversive fiction tears down. It is dedicated to the destruction of civilization, of truth, beauty, God, and the good and decent values that make up a healthy society.

Superversive fiction builds up. It inspires, it builds, it tells us that the good, the true, and the beautiful are important, and matter.

Note that this doesn’t mean you need to be sappy - in fact, we don’t want you to be. You don’t even necessarily need a happy ending. What we’re looking for is fiction that actually has something positive to say, something that will actively make the world a better place.

Examples:

  • J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings”

  • The works of C.S. Lewis, especially “The Chronicles of Narnia”

  • The works of John C. Wright, especially “Awake in the Night Land”

  • Nick Cole’s “The Wasteland Saga”

  • Stephen Lawhead’s Pendragon Cycle
